We have progress! We planted our garden back on April 18, 2010. We re-planted it a couple of weeks later because we were stupid and planted before monsoon season here in the midwest. But I suppose the old saying April showers bring May flowers is right, because we have a full-on veggie garden! Hip hip hooray! The pics below were taken less than a month apart. The first one was when we were just barely getting sprouts and the second one shows evidence that we are well on our way to having a freezer full of veggies this fall/winter!

All gloating aside, this glorious garden did come at a price.
Worrying about too much rain . . .
. . . worrying about not enough rain . . .
. . . backbreaking weeding . . .
. . . breaking child labor laws . . .
. . . an occasional water fight . . .
. . . (probably reversible) facial contortion . . .
. . . missing out on playtime with friends . . .
. . . icky mouthfuls of dirt . . .
and painful lessons learned. Like, don't transplant a perfectly content pumpkin plant in the middle of the day. It wilted almost immediately. It may come back. I'll let you know.
We have been having so much fun working in the garden as a family and we are so looking forward to harvesting more of our fruits & veggies as they come in! We are also thinking about setting up a (very small) roadside stand later this summer. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Words of wisdom?
